Winnipeg, MB – A 31 year old man has been arrested and charged after a fire allegedly was set beneath a railway bridge in Winnipeg, leaving the structure damaged but still operational.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service , West District officers responded at approximately 8:15 p.m. Tuesday to a small railway bridge near Empress Avenue and Westway Avenue , over Omand's Creek.
Police said officers saw flames and smoke coming from beneath the structure. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service personnel responded and extinguished the blaze.
The suspect allegedly left the area before police arrived. About 30 minutes after the initial response, officers located a man in the 600 block of Erin Street and arrested him without incident, police said.
Authorities identified the accused as Dylan Dorrie, 31 . He has been charged with arson causing damage to property. Police said he also faces a charge of failing to comply with a probation order in connection with an existing warrant.
Following consultation with the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Police Service , Dorrie was additionally charged under Canada's Railway Safety Act with unlawfully entering railway property without a lawful excuse, according to Winnipeg police.
The railway bridge sustained damage from the fire, but authorities said it remains operational. A financial estimate of the damage was not immediately available.
Police said Dorrie was detained in custody pending further court proceedings.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
