KANKAKEE, IL – On this Memorial Day morning, under clear skies, a poignant groundbreaking ceremony took place to honor the memory and sacrifice of veterans.

The Ray Olley Memorial Project 2023 reached a significant milestone as the construction of a remarkable memorial commenced. The project, located in Kankakee, Illinois, aims to pay tribute to the enduring legacy of WWII veteran Ray Olley and raise awareness about the profound impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on our servicemembers.

The parcel of land, generously donated by Mrs. Dee Webber and Alan N. Webber, was transformed into a hallowed ground where memories will be immortalized. Colorful flags, thoughtfully arranged by ROMP brother Rory Serafini, fluttered in the breeze, adding a touch of solemnity and reverence to the occasion.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held at 9am Monday drew a crowd of distinguished guests, including Kankakee Mayor Chris Curtis and Edwin Fritz, a 93-year-old Korean War veteran. Their presence symbolized the unity of a community that stands together in honoring those who have served. Additionally, surprise dignitaries graced the event, intensifying the atmosphere of respect and gratitude.

“Ray Ollie has the human element in this memorial,” said Coordinator of the Ray Olley Project, Jojo Sayson. “This is not just about for Ray Olley, this is for all veterans, all those who fought, those who wore a uniform, those who never came back home, the missing in action, it’s all for them.”

The Ray Olley Memorial Project seeks to create a lasting tribute that brings attention to PTSD, a condition that impacted Ray Olley profoundly after losing many friends in the war, as well as his beloved dog, his ship’s mascot. The memorial will feature a magnificent 6-foot-tall brass statue of Ray Olley, a WWII US Navy veteran, standing alongside his faithful companion, Elinore. Each statue weighs in at a substantial 500 pounds.

As the construction progresses, the Ray Olley Memorial Project remains dedicated to preserving the legacies of our heroes and ensuring their stories resonate with future generations. Today’s groundbreaking ceremony not only signifies the commencement of a physical structure but also the unity of a community that values patriotism and remembrance.

The Ray Olley Memorial Project serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by our veterans and aims to prevent PTSD-related suicide. It also advocates against animal cruelty, particularly concerning service dogs. Through this memorial, Kankakee will be home to the only memorial in the country specifically highlighting the impact of PTSD on our veterans.

As the day draws to a close, the Ray Olley Memorial Project’s groundbreaking ceremony stands as a powerful symbol of honor and remembrance. It signifies a commitment to a better America, where the valor of our veterans is cherished, and their stories will forever echo in the hearts and minds of all who visit this sacred memorial.
