JOLIET – A driver of a car participating in a funeral procession is in critical condition after being hit by a speeding car that lost control and went into oncoming traffic.
According to Joliet police, a driver speeding was at the root of what became a multi-vehicle crash with various injuries reported on Route 53 Wednesday that took out at least four vehicles, and caused a Hearse to wreck.
Following a preliminary investigation, Joliet police report a driver traveling at high rates of speed lost control and swerved into oncoming southbound lanes of Route 53 Wednesday. The driver had attempted to re-enter the northbound lanes and was struck by four separate vehicles participating in a funeral procession near Mills Road.
The Hearse leading that funeral procession attempted to avoid the oncoming collision and crashed into another driver on the road in the process.
Police say the speeder is expected to survive and had been transported to New Lenox Silver Cross Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Two other drivers had been taken to AMITA St. Joseph Medical Center, one with critical injuries.
The driver of the speeding car’s name has yet to be released, but has been cited by the Joliet Police Traffic Division.
