Springfield, Ill – With Halloween’s allure comes a stark warning. Between 2017 and 2019, decorations ignited an alarming 9,200 fires around Halloween, resulting in 25 deaths and $117 million in losses.

Illinois State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera emphasizes the importance of safety discussions with children, suggesting glow sticks as a safer alternative for jack-o-lanterns. When selecting costumes, avoid trailing fabrics, and ensure masks provide clear vision.

Teach children about open flame dangers and keep decorations away from heat sources. Amid the festivities, regularly check smoke alarms and keep escape routes clear. Safety first ensures a spooky yet fun celebration.
