CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Construction sites in Champaign faced a series of thefts over the weekend, according to the University of Illinois Police.

Two incidents were reported, highlighting a disturbing trend that has alarmed local authorities.

In the first incident, a construction manager informed the police that tools valued at $2,290 were stolen between Friday night and Saturday morning from a job site located in the 100 block of East Springfield Avenue. Investigators discovered evidence of forced entry into a building where the tools had been securely stored.

The second incident involved tools stolen from a job site in the 500 block of South Third Street. The theft occurred between noon on Saturday and 6:40 a.m. on Monday. The estimated value of the stolen tools amounts to several thousand dollars. Similarly, evidence of forced entry into an apartment, where the tools were kept, was found.

The recent surge in thefts from construction sites in Champaign raises concerns about the vulnerability of such locations. Construction managers and contractors are advised to take necessary precautions to protect their assets. This includes securing tools and equipment in locked buildings or using additional measures like surveillance systems and alarm systems.

Both incidents remain under investigation.  Anyone with relevant information to the crimes is asked to contact investigators.
