CHICAGO, IL – The Chicago Cubs have reportedly signed outfielder Ian Happ to a $61 million contract extension that will keep him in a Cubs uniform from 2024 to 2026.

The move takes one of the best potential free-agent bats off the market.

Happ, a 26-year-old switch-hitter, has been a consistent contributor to the Cubs since his debut in 2017. He hit 24 home runs and had 77 RBIs in 2019 and followed up with another solid campaign in 2020. Although he struggled at the start of the 2021 season, Happ has shown flashes of his potential and has been a key player for the Cubs.

This contract extension is a significant move for the Cubs, who are looking to rebuild their team and return to playoff contention. It also shows their commitment to keeping talented players in Chicago.

Happ, who was set to become a free agent after the 2023 season, is thrilled to continue playing for the Cubs and hopes to help lead the team to success in the coming years. In recent years, Happ has shown an interest in the business of surrounding communities, including a local coffee company, Connect Roasters, which announced its first brick and mortar store opening in Bourbonnais soon.

Happ’s recent achievements include finishing the 2022 season with a career-high 158 games played, hitting .271/.342/.440 with 17 home runs, 72 RBIs, 72 runs, and 42 doubles. He made his first All-Star game and, on defense, won a Gold Glove Award in left field.
