NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State University (ISU) community received an update from the university police regarding a gun threat at Hewett Hall.

According to ISU Police, the department received a call Saturday evening at 5:47 p.m. alerting them that an individual with a gun was present on the 8th floor of the hall. The police responded promptly and arrived on the scene in less than three minutes, with the Normal Police joining in the response efforts.

Upon arrival, the university housing staff had already determined that the person with the gun was an ISU student in possession of an airsoft gel pellet gun, also known as an Orbeez gun. The use of such weapons is prohibited in the residence halls. The university police coordinated with the housing staff, who are addressing the incident in accordance with their procedures and the Student Code of Conduct.

In light of the incident, ISU officials have assured students of their commitment to ensuring their safety and well-being while on campus.

Students who may be experiencing emotional distress in the aftermath of the incident are encouraged to seek support from Student Counseling Services, which can be contacted by calling (309) 438-3655 or visiting Counseling.IllinoisState.edu.
