NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Naperville police are investigating after a faculty member found a noose on the grounds of Scullen Middle School Thursday. The school is part of Indian Prairie School District 204.
It is unclear how the noose ended up on the school’s property. Police are not releasing further information at this time, saying it is in the early stages of the investigation.
This is not the first time a noose has been found in the Chicago area. Last year, a noose was discovered on the construction site of the Obama Presidential Center, which temporarily halted work.
The discovery of a noose on school property is a disturbing development, especially as the nation continues to grapple with issues of racial justice and equity. The symbolism of a noose is widely known to represent hate and violence toward African Americans and other marginalized communities.
