LAKE COUNTY, IN – A tragic accident occurred on Saturday at the construction zone of I-80 in Lake County resulting in one death.

According to preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Lawrence McFarrin, a blue 2019 Kia was speeding through the construction zone when it crashed into a crash attenuator, causing the vehicle to go airborne and fly into the lanes of travel. The Kia was hit by a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado on the driver’s side door area, resulting in the death of the Kia’s driver. The driver of the Chevrolet was fortunately unharmed.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office and the Gary Fire Department arrived at the scene to assist. The identity of the driver is yet to be revealed after the family has been notified.

The accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of speeding through construction zones. While warnings are posted and lane shifts are marked, reduced speeds are essential for ensuring the safety of drivers, construction workers, and other road users.

The Indiana State Police urges all drivers to take extra caution while driving through work zones, especially during the construction season. The consequences of reckless driving can be fatal, and it is crucial to prioritize safety on the road.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and the Indiana State Police is urging all drivers to remain alert and focused while driving through construction zones.
