Pedestrian hit by vehicle, killed on I-55 late Saturday night near Plainfield Township

PLAINFIELD – An unidentified man was killed late Saturday night after he was struck and killed by a passing vehicle on I-55.

According to Illinois State Police, it happened just before midnight when a 2006 Silver Buick Lucerne driven by 29-year-old Joseph P. Gibbs of Morrison, Illinois struck the unidentified pedestrian in the southbound lane of traffic near mile marker 260. 

The pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries. Will County Coroner’s Office later pronounced the unidentified man dead at 3:35 am. 

An autopsy is scheduled for later today.

Southbound I-55 was closed for the traffic crash investigation until 5 am Sunday morning.  During the investigation, an Illinois State Police Trooper was struck by another driver head-on while redirecting traffic.  The Trooper is recovering from minor injuries

No charges have been reported against Gibbs.

Illinois State Police are investigating the incident.
