ILLINOIS – Today is National Paranormal Day, and there’s no better time to explore the unexplained.

From haunted cemeteries to mysterious airships and phantom horses, Illinois has a rich history of eerie encounters. These stories may seem far-fetched, but witnesses have reported unexplainable occurrences that continue to puzzle even the most skeptical individuals.

One such location is the Old Union Cemetery in Clinton, where visitors have reported strange sensations, glowing balls of light, and an unusual drop in temperature. Some believe the cemetery is a portal between dimensions, allowing otherworldly beings to enter our world.

Another story that captivates many is the Watseka Wonder in the small town of Watseka, Illinois. In 1877, a young girl named Lurancy Vennum fell into a deep sleep and claimed to speak with spirits, speaking in different languages and voices. The story quickly spread, and it wasn’t long before many believed that Lurancy’s body was possessed by the spirit of another.

Mysterious airships that appeared across the state in the late 1800s and early 1900s have never been fully explained. These vast metal wingspans and bright lights flew over Evanston and several other communities near Chicago, and the occupants of the airship had strange messages to pass along. Though many theories have been proposed, the mystery remains unsolved.  Even a local mayor made a report of witnessing one.

In Palos Hills, motorists report seeing phantom horses on Kean Avenue, suddenly appearing in their headlights before disappearing moments later. It’s believed that these ghostly horses are the phantoms of animals and riders who were struck and killed in the past. The sightings have been ongoing for years, making the location a popular spot for those looking for paranormal experiences.

While some may dismiss these stories as mere myths, the intrigue and mystery surrounding these locations continue to attract visitors year after year. So why not take some time to explore the unexplained on this National Paranormal Day? Do you have a favorite local lore tale? Who knows, you may just experience something out of the ordinary.
