KANKAKEE – Illinois State Police have begun an independent investigation into the death of an inmate held at the Jerome Combs Detention Center.
Dewayne Tucker died last Friday while in custody at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee days after being admitted to the facility. In a press release Thursday, Kankakee Sheriff’s Police said Tucker was evaluated on multiple occasions while in custody at Jerome Combs Detention Center.
Tucker was held in Kankakee from August 16th to September 7th.
“On the morning of September 7, 2022, Tucker was experiencing additional medical issues and the decision was made by the JCDC medical staff to transport Tucker for treatment at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.” Kankakee Sheriff’s Police said in a statement.
The Sheriff’s Department was notified by the hospital Tucker had died two days later.
An investigation into Tucker’s death will remain under Illinois State Police. The Kankakee Sheriff’s Office will be unable to comment further while he investigation is pending.
