KANKAKEE – A teen is recovering today after they were shot in a car near Kankakee High School Wednesday afternoon.
Early reports indicated the incident took place on Kankakee High School grounds, which were later retracted Thursday by City Police.
According to City Police, it happened at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday when an unidentified 17-year-old minor, was sitting in a car with two other teens. That’s when, according to reports, a firearm unintentionally discharged in the vehicle.
City Police reported the teens were leaving the High School Parking lot for food and drinks, when someplace between the parking lot of the high school and Jeffery Street, the shooting occurred.
The driver of the car drove the injured teen to St. Mary’s Hospital where they were treated for the gunshot wound.
The teen’s condition is not known at this time.
Police arrested an unnamed 17-year-old in connection responsible for the shooting around 6 p.m. Wednesday night. Detectives investigating the case will be meeting with the State’s Attorney’s Office today to review the case and determine charges.
The weapon used during the incident has yet to be recovered. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 815-933-0426
