Newport, North Carolina – Record-breaking heat is gripping Newport and eastern North Carolina, with dangerous temperatures and a heat index expected to reach as high as 111°F Saturday afternoon. Residents are urged to take immediate precautions as an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, actual highs near 97°F will combine with tropical humidity to push the heat index to hazardous levels across Carteret, Craven, and neighboring counties. Scattered thunderstorms may develop Sunday afternoon, offering little relief but bringing potential for gusty winds and brief downpours.

Local impacts will be felt most acutely in Newport, Beaufort, and along Highway 70, where outdoor activities are strongly discouraged during peak afternoon hours. Power companies are bracing for increased electricity demand, while emergency officials urge residents to limit time outside, stay hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors. Pets should be brought indoors, and vehicles should never be left unattended.

This heat wave arrives earlier and more severe than usual, resembling the region’s historic July surges in 2021 and 2016. Cooling centers are open throughout Carteret County, and schools may alter sports schedules if conditions persist.

Dangerously high temperatures and scattered storms remain possible through Sunday night. More advisories or weather updates may follow as conditions evolve.
