Sherman, MI – Floodwaters are already pushing into homes and closing roads across Wexford County as the Manistee River surged well beyond flood stage Sunday morning, creating urgent safety risks for residents near Sherman and Mesick.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the river reached 17.3 feet as of 10 a.m. Sunday, exceeding the 15-foot flood stage by more than 2 feet. The Manistee River peaked at 18.1 feet within the past 24 hours, placing this event near historic levels and prompting a continued flood warning “until further notice.”
Major impacts are unfolding along the river’s right bank near Sherman. Homes and properties on Ojibway Drive, Ottawa Drive, and Chippewa Drive are experiencing flooding, with المياه encroaching into residential areas about a mile north of town. Northwest of Mesick, N11 Road between W14 and W16 roads is inundated, making travel dangerous or impossible in that corridor.
Emergency officials warn drivers to avoid flooded roadways at all times. Even shallow المياه can disable vehicles or sweep them away, especially at night when hazards are harder to see. Residents in low-lying areas should prepare for extended flooding by charging devices, securing valuables, and staying alert for updated warnings.
The river is expected to gradually fall but remain above flood stage through Sunday, April 26, prolonging impacts across Wexford County. Additional advisories or road closures may be issued as water levels change in the days ahead.
