Burlington, VT – Slick roads and reduced visibility are already disrupting the Monday morning commute across northern Vermont, with black ice forming on bridges and snow showers moving through the region until late morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, temperatures have dropped to at or below freezing across much of the state, allowing leftover moisture to freeze on roadways. Light to occasionally moderate snow showers are expected between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m., with the most significant impacts during the early commute window through 9 a.m.
Cities including Burlington, Montpelier, St. Albans, and Middlebury are seeing patchy black ice, especially on elevated surfaces like I-89, Route 7, and local overpasses. Snow accumulations may reach up to 1 inch in isolated areas, briefly reducing visibility and worsening driving conditions.
Drivers should reduce speed immediately, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. Sudden snow bursts may create rapid changes in road conditions within minutes.
Conditions will gradually improve by late morning as temperatures rise above freezing, but lingering wet roads could still pose hazards in shaded areas. Additional updates are expected mid-morning if snow bands intensify or persist longer than expected.
