Newton County, IN – A tragic accident claimed the life of a 63-year-old Indiana man in the early hours of Monday morning.
According to Newton County Sheriff’s Police reports, the incident occurred on State Road 16 near Newton County Road 300 East, and preliminary reports suggest that the driver of the involved vehicle failed to notice the moped, resulting in the fatal collision.
Authorities, along with fire and medical personnel, rushed to the scene shortly before 6 am, responding to distress calls about the accident. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim, identified as a resident of Rensselaer, was operating a moped traveling eastbound on State Road 16. Tragically, he was struck from behind by another eastbound vehicle. According to the female driver of the other vehicle, she “didn’t see him” due to the limited visibility in the early morning hours.
A witness at the scene corroborated the driver’s account, noting that the moped’s lights were notably dim, potentially contributing to the lack of visibility.
An investigation into the crash remains ongoing. So far, no charges have been announced in the case.
