Chicago, IL – As warmer weather draws outdoor enthusiasts across the United States, health officials are emphasizing the importance of vigilance for Lyme disease symptoms, especially in tick-prone areas.

In Illinois alone, there are 15 different species of ticks, highlighting the widespread risk of tick encounters throughout the country. Lyme disease, transmitted primarily by the blacklegged tick or deer tick, is prevalent in wooded and brushy regions nationwide.

Experts recommend conducting thorough tick checks after spending time outdoors, particularly in areas with long grass or dense vegetation. Immediate removal of ticks is critical and should be done using fine-pointed tweezers to ensure no parts of the tick remain embedded in the skin.

Key symptoms of Lyme disease include a distinctive bullseye-shaped rash, fever, headaches, fatigue, and joint pain. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that prompt treatment with antibiotics is generally effective for Lyme disease. However, if left untreated, the disease can lead to more severe neurological and joint complications.

To minimize risks, use insect repellents and wear protective clothing when in tick habitats. Awareness and preventative measures are vital for those enjoying the great outdoors.
