Mechanical Issue leads to Emergency Closure of Route 53 Ruby Street Bridge over the Des Plaines River

Joliet, IL – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced the immediate closure of the Ruby Street Bridge over the Des Plaines River for emergency repairs due to a mechanical failure.

The bridge, located on IL Route 53, was scheduled for closure on May 13 but the date has been advanced to start at 6 PM Friday, May 3, 2024, following the unexpected issue. 

Motorists are advised to anticipate a closure lasting at least 60 days and should follow posted detour routes. IDOT urges drivers to use alternate routes and exercise caution while traveling near the affected area.

According to Rosemaria DiBenedetto of IDOT, this proactive measure is essential to ensure the safety and integrity of the bridge infrastructure.
