CHESTERTON, Ind. — A routine gun cleaning in Chesterton’s Crocker neighborhood took a disastrous turn last Friday evening. A 21-year-old woman is now in stable condition after being inadvertently shot by her boyfriend, the Chesterton Police report.

According to police reports it began at a residence on Crocker Street around 6:07 p.m. First responders discovered the injured woman with a gunshot trajectory from her upper buttocks to her pelvis. Immediate first aid was rendered until Northwest Health-Porter EMS took over.

Throughout the incident, the victim remained conscious and alert, and was subsequently airlifted to South Bend’s Memorial Hospital. Investigators report early indications suggest the boyfriend’s new semi-automatic pistol went off unintentionally during cleaning.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
