Mishawaka, IN – In a harrowing turn of events early Wednesday morning, a three-year-old boy survived with only minor injuries after his father attempted to end his own life by jumping off the Main Street Bridge.Â
Authorities reported that the incident occurred around 12:45 a.m., when two witnesses discovered a vehicle parked facing the wrong way on the overpass. The father, a 45-year-old man from South Bend, was holding his child when he leapt from the bridge, landing in the inside leftbound lane of the toll road below.
A bystander tried to intervene but was unable to hold onto the man. After the fall, the bystander quickly acted to move both the father and the child to safety. Police arrived shortly thereafter to assist. The father was pronounced dead from his injuries at Memorial Hospital, while the toddler is expected to be released from the hospital within a day or two, having sustained only minor injuries.
