Newport, MI – Two young siblings were killed and thirteen others injured when a driver, reportedly under the influence, plowed into a building hosting a birthday party in Newport, Michigan.
According to investigators the incident occurred at around 3 PM on Saturday at the Swan Creek Boat Club, located at 6332 Brancheau St. Authorities reported that a 66-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle, smashing through the north wall of the building and coming to a stop deep inside the venue where the party was in full swing. Emergency responders described the scene as “extremely chaotic” as they arrived to administer aid to the victims.
Among the injured were nine individuals, including both children and adults, who were urgently transported to nearby hospitals with serious, life-threatening conditions. The deceased siblings, an eight-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver has been taken into custody and is facing charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, with additional charges pending.
The local community and emergency teams, including the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and multiple fire departments, responded promptly to the tragedy. The ongoing investigation has also led to the temporary closure of a nearby tavern, linked to the events leading up to the crash.
