Crown Point, IN – Lake County, Indiana residents are being targeted by a sophisticated warrant scam, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department reports.

Victims receive calls from fraudsters, with caller IDs falsely showing the Sheriff’s Department’s number. The scammers, using the name of an actual Lake County officer, falsely claim there is an arrest warrant and demand cash payment.

According to Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr., the department never solicits warrant payments over the phone and urges the public to report such calls. Citizens are advised to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 219-755-3346 with any information.
