Greenwood, IN – A tragic incident unfolded on I-65 northbound when a vehicle carrying three people veered off the road and struck a tree near the 96 mile marker, Indiana State Police reported.

According to reports the crash occurred at 9:38 AM, approximately six miles north of the Franklin Exit. Upon arrival, first responders found two unresponsive females, identified as 52-year-old Cearmease Evans and 17-year-old Chaise Franklin from Chicago, who were pronounced dead at the scene due to traumatic injuries. A third occupant, the driver, was found conscious and later transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation suggests the gold 2011 Jeep they were in ran into a ditch before hitting several trees, causing significant damage to the passenger side of the vehicle. Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists are investigating the cause of the accident.

The roadway was restricted for several hours but has since reopened.
