I-57 crash near Peotone claims life of Blue Island man

PEOTONE – A multi-vehicle accident Thursday night on southbound I-57 left a Blue Island man dead.

According to reports, it happened at 8:08 pm Thursday when crews were called to the scene of the three-vehicle accident, of which two were heavily damaged.  Emergency crews arrived on the scene within 15 minutes and found five victims among the wreck, three of which were in critical condition. One patient was airlifted to a nearby hospital. 

The Will County Coroner’s Office reported the death of 22-year-old Kevin M. Chin-Vasquez of Blue Island Friday afternoon.  Chin-Vasquez was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash at 10:48pm.

A total of 13 agencies from the surrounding area responded to the accident, including Peotone Fire Protection District, Manhattan Fire Protection District, Monee Fire Protection District, Beecher Fire Protection District, Frankfort Fire Protection District, New Lenox Fire Protection District, University Park Fire Department, Crete Fire Department, Crete Township Fire Department, Steger Estates Fire Department, Bourbonnais Fire Department, Grant Park Fire Department, and Richton Park Fire Department.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation with Illinois State Police.
