BROOKLYN, NY – Real Kosher Ice Cream, a beloved Brooklyn ice cream haven, has issued a voluntary recall for their popular Soft Serve On The Go cups, amid alarming concerns of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium, known to cause grave and potentially fatal infections, has prompted the company to take immediate action, particularly regarding the safety of children.
Listeria infections pose serious risks, especially for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals might experience short-term symptoms like fever, headache, and abdominal discomfort, the danger is much higher for pregnant women, with potential miscarriages and stillbirths linked to the infection.
Distributed in multiple states, including CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, IL, MA, MD, MI, MN, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, VA, and WV, the affected Soft Serve On The Go cups are packaged in recognizable 8 fl oz. plastic cups. The product, lacking LOT numbers or best-by dates, can be identified only by the UPC codes on the packaging. The recall spans items produced prior to August 4th, 2023.
Two cases of illness have been reported in New York and Pennsylvania. Although both patients required hospitalization, there have been no fatalities reported. The recall was initiated after a consumer fell ill post-consumption, leading to positive Listeria monocytogenes findings in product samples tested by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
The company has swiftly halted production and distribution, collaborating with the FDA to pinpoint the contamination source. Consumers are urgently advised to cease consumption, either discarding the product or returning it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
