Indiana Man Charged with Reckless Homicide Following Death of 24-Year-Old English Teacher

PORTAGE, IN – The Portage Police Department announced Thursday Arthur H. Schmidt, a 42-year-old resident of Portage, had been charged with reckless homicide in connection with the tragic death of Lauren Thompson, a 24-year-old English teacher.

The arrest stems from a six car wreck that took place in November 2022 at the intersection of Willowcreek Road and Lute Road. 

Thompson, a Chesterton resident, was known for her dedication to teaching and had recently graduated from Purdue University. 

Schmidt is now being held at the Porter County Jail, facing multiple felonies, including Reckless Homicide and Aggressive Driving Resulting In Death. 

The Portage Police Department expressed their condolences to Thompson’s family while commending their officers and detectives for their diligent efforts in bringing about this arrest.
