KANKAKEE – As National Groundwater Awareness Week begins, the Kankakee County Health Department is encouraging residents who rely on private wells for their drinking water to have their wells tested.
Established in 1999, National Groundwater Awareness Week is a time to promote responsible development, management, and use of groundwater. This annual observance serves as a platform to highlight the importance of regular water well testing and maintenance and promote policies that impact groundwater quality and supply.
The Kankakee County Health Department is offering water sample kits for residents who want to test their well water for nitrates and coliform bacteria. The department has provided instructions and updated costs for the kits, which can be obtained by calling 815-802-9412.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, private wells are not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, which means it is the responsibility of the well owner to ensure the safety and quality of their drinking water. Testing well water on a regular basis is an essential step in protecting the health of those who rely on private wells for their drinking water.
