Black Bear Spotted in Illinois: Safety Tips for Encounters

RANDOLPH COUNTY, Ill. — A bear sighting near Evansville has raised concerns among southern Illinois residents. The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the sighting on Saturday, June 3, 2023, following an investigation.

Officials urge caution and advise against approaching the bear. Instead, maintain a safe distance and allow it to move on. Report sightings to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

To stay safe during a black bear encounter, make noise to alert the bear of your presence. Avoid running and maintain a respectful distance. If the bear approaches, stand your ground, raise your arms, and back away slowly. Seek shelter indoors or in a vehicle if possible. Do not feed bears as it can lead to property damage.

Black bear populations have been rising the Midwest in recent years.

Remember, black bears are large omnivores with a rounded appearance and black or dark brown coat. They may exhibit defensive or territorial behaviors. Use caution and avoid provoking the bear.
