Chicago Man charged with Murder Following Fatal Shooting in Kankakee

KANKAKEE, IL – A Chicago man is now in police custody after the death of a Park Forest resident in Kankakee. 

According to Kankakee City Police Chief Robin Passwater, the incident unfolded on Monday afternoon just before 2 p.m. when Kankakee Police Officers responded to a residence on South Osborn Ave. Upon arrival, they discovered Darrick A. Smith, who had sustained a gunshot wound. 

Despite being rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital, Smith, aged 53, was pronounced dead. 

Witnesses identified the suspect as Joseph G. Smith, the victim’s nephew of Chicago, who fled the scene in a vehicle. Law enforcement later apprehended 39-year-old Joseph Smith walking in the 200 block of Tedmark Court without incident. 

He has been charged with Murder and is currently held at the Jerome Combs Detention Center.
