GIBSON CITY – A massive fire broke out early Thursday morning in a commercial building located in the 100 block of N Sangamon Avenue at the corner of East 9th Street.

The fire spread to two other buildings before firefighters were able to extinguish the flames after more than seven hours of effort. No injuries were reported in the blaze, but the damage to the buildings is significant.

Officials in Gibson City had asked residents and businesses to conserve water voluntarily to support firefighting efforts.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but believed to originate inside an apartment.  The investigation into the blaze is ongoing.
