Springfield, IL – Central Illinois is facing a potential severe weather threat over the Memorial Day weekend, with forecasts indicating possibility for damaging storms on both Friday and Sunday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has placed the area under a level 2 (of 5) risk for severe weather on Friday. A line of thunderstorms is expected to move east across the region, bringing the greatest risk of damaging winds. According to the NWS, the storms will begin in the morning west of I-55, moving eastward and impacting areas east of I-55 from midday through mid-afternoon.
Sunday’s forecast raises even more concern, with areas near and south of I-70 facing a 30% chance of severe weather, equivalent to a level 3 risk, and a 15% chance north of I-70. The primary threats include damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of tornadoes. The highest threat period is anticipated to be during the afternoon and evening hours.
Given the holiday weekend, outdoor activities are expected to be higher than usual, prompting officials to urge residents to stay informed and exercise caution. The NWS advises keeping up with the latest weather updates and being prepared to take action if severe weather warnings are issued.
