Pendleton, OR – Travel across the Blue Mountains will become dangerous by early morning, with snow and wind rapidly reducing visibility and covering roads by 2 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday for elevations above 4,500 feet across northeast Oregon and southeast Washington. Snow totals will reach 7 to 12 inches in the northern Blue Mountains, with 4 to 8 inches farther south. Winds will gust up to 50 mph, producing blowing snow and near-whiteout conditions at times.

Major travel routes through the region, including mountain passes near Meacham, Tollgate, and routes approaching Ski Bluewood Resort, will see the most severe impacts. Snowfall rates may become heavy at times, quickly coating pavement and reducing traction. Visibility could drop sharply during stronger wind gusts, especially along exposed ridgelines.

Communities such as Ukiah, Long Creek, and North Powder will also experience accumulating snow at higher elevations, while lower elevations between 4,000 and 4,500 feet may see lighter accumulation but still face slick conditions.

Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel through mountain passes during peak snowfall hours. If travel is required, carry chains, reduce speed, and check TripCheck or WSDOT updates before departing.

Conditions will begin improving after 8 p.m. Wednesday, though lingering slick roads and reduced visibility may persist into the night. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall intensifies.
