Kankakee and Will County anglers, get ready for the upcoming spring trout fishing season in Illinois! On April 1st, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) will open up 58 ponds, lakes, and streams across the state for fishing enthusiasts to cast their lines.
The IDNR will stock over 80,000 rainbow trout this year in areas that permit trout fishing during the spring season. Among the stocked sites for the 2023 spring trout season are Bird Park Quarry in Kankakee and Lake Milliken in Des Plaines State Fish and Wildlife Area, both located in Kankakee and Will County.
Additionally, Rock Creek in Kankakee River State Park is open for the catch-and-release early spring season fishing that started on March 18th.
If you plan to head out to your favorite fishing spot, make sure you have a valid fishing license and Inland Trout Stamp, even if you plan to release the fish caught before April 1st. The daily harvest limit for each angler is five trout.
Fishing licenses and Inland Trout Stamps are available now at IDNR license and permit locations throughout Illinois. You can also purchase them online at https://www.exploremoreil.com. Keep in mind that some locations may not open at 5 a.m. on the first day of the season, so check the opening time of your preferred location before the open date.
Trout fishing can be a challenging sport, but with a few tips and tricks, you can increase your chances of catching more fish on your next trip. For example, try using the right lure or bait, paying attention to the water, using light tackle, varying your retrieve, staying stealthy, and fishing early or late in the day.
Whether you’re an experienced angler or a first-timer, the IDNR encourages everyone to take advantage of the spring trout fishing season in Illinois.
