Burlington, Vermont – Dry air and gusty winds are raising fire danger concerns across Vermont, prompting officials to highlight how quickly outdoor burning can turn dangerous.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, Red Flag conditions develop when low humidity, strong winds, and dry vegetation combine, allowing fires to spread rapidly and become difficult to control. These conditions can emerge with little rainfall and increasing springtime drying across the region.
A Fire Weather Watch may be issued 12 to 48 hours in advance when those conditions are possible, giving residents and fire crews time to prepare. If critical fire conditions are expected within 24 hours or already occurring, a Red Flag Warning is issued, signaling a higher risk for fast-moving wildfires.
In northern Vermont, including Burlington and surrounding communities, officials are urging residents to avoid open burning when these conditions are present. Even small fires can quickly grow out of control under dry and windy patterns.
Residents are advised to follow local fire warden guidance, secure any outdoor flames, and remain alert for updates. Additional advisories could be issued as conditions evolve into the weekend.
