Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Residents are being urged to hang up immediately if they receive a call demanding payment from someone claiming to be with the Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Office of the Sheriff of Philadelphia, scammers are actively spoofing official phone numbers and impersonating deputies in an attempt to collect money or personal information. Officials stress that the Sheriff’s Office will never contact residents by phone to request payment or ask for funds through apps like Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, or by check.

The scam relies on urgency, often pressuring victims to act quickly to avoid supposed legal consequences. Authorities warn that sharing financial details or sending money under these conditions can lead to immediate loss and identity theft.

Anyone receiving these calls should not provide any information and should disconnect right away. Victims or those who suspect fraud are encouraged to report the incident to the Federal Communications Commission at 1-888-225-5322, as well as local law enforcement or the District Attorney’s Office.

Officials say these spoofing scams continue to circulate and could increase, urging residents to stay alert and only use verified government websites for any legitimate payments.
