Danville, IL – A suspect has been formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with a 2025 shooting that left a 15-year-old dead, according to an update from the Danville Police Department.
According to police, officers initially responded around 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2025, to the 1200 block of East Williams Street for reports of gunfire. The victim, who was 15 at the time, was found with multiple gunshot wounds and later transported for treatment.
Authorities said the victim succumbed to those injuries on April 1, 2026, while receiving care at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Police identified the suspect as Lavelle Dozier, 18, of Danville. According to police, Dozier had previously been taken into custody following the incident after a brief foot pursuit with assistance from the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department. He was allegedly awaiting trial on related charges before the case was upgraded.
On Monday, April 20, 2026, Dozier was formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the victim’s death, authorities said.
The investigation remains active, and additional details have not been released.
