Blacksburg, VA – Freezing temperatures will return late tonight across southwest Virginia and surrounding areas, bringing a renewed risk for crop damage, icy roads, and early Tuesday travel impacts.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Freeze Warning and Frost Advisory are in effect from late Monday night through Tuesday morning across southeast West Virginia, southwest and south-central Virginia, and portions of northwest North Carolina. Temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 20s to low 30s by daybreak Tuesday.

The coldest conditions will develop after 11 PM, with subfreezing air settling along the I-81 corridor, including Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Wytheville. Mountain valleys may see even colder pockets, increasing the likelihood of widespread frost and localized ice on bridges and untreated roads.

Sensitive vegetation is at high risk, as freezing temperatures can quickly damage or kill crops and garden plants. Residents should cover plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and protect outdoor plumbing where possible.

Conditions will improve after 9 AM Tuesday as temperatures rise above freezing, but additional cold alerts may be issued if clear skies allow temperatures to drop further overnight.
