Jackson, KY – Temperatures will fall below freezing across eastern Kentucky late tonight, putting crops and early Tuesday travel at risk as cold air settles into valleys before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 11 p.m. Monday until 9 a.m. Tuesday for much of east central, northeast, and southeast Kentucky. Overnight lows are expected to drop between 28 and 32 degrees, with the coldest readings concentrated in sheltered valleys while higher ridges remain slightly above freezing.

Communities including Pikeville, Hazard, Prestonsburg, Morehead, and Harlan will see several hours of sub-freezing temperatures. Low-lying areas along KY-80, US-23, and US-119 are especially vulnerable to frost development, which could create slick spots on bridges and reduced visibility early Tuesday morning.

Agriculture faces the greatest impact. Early spring crops, fruit trees, and gardens are at high risk of freeze damage after recent mild conditions. Patchy frost is also expected on ridgelines, expanding the area of concern beyond valley floors.

Residents should cover sensitive plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and avoid early travel where frost may form. Outdoor water systems should be protected to prevent freezing.

Temperatures will rise above freezing after 9 a.m. Tuesday, but additional cold nights remain possible this week, which could extend the growing season risk across the region.
