Roxboro, NC – Temperatures will drop below freezing within hours across parts of central North Carolina, threatening crops and creating early Tuesday travel concerns before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday for Granville and Person counties, including Roxboro, Oxford, and Creedmoor. Overnight lows are expected to fall to around 29 degrees, cold enough to produce widespread frost and freeze conditions.
The coldest window will occur just before daybreak, impacting rural and low-lying areas along US-15, US-158, and NC-96. Patchy frost may form on bridges and secondary roads, increasing the risk of slick spots for early commuters, especially before 7 a.m.
Agriculture remains the primary concern. Tender plants, gardens, and early-season crops are vulnerable to damage or loss after recent warm weather accelerated growth. Unprotected outdoor plumbing could also be at risk in colder pockets.
Residents should cover or bring in sensitive vegetation, disconnect hoses, and protect exposed pipes. Those traveling early Tuesday should allow extra time and watch for frost on untreated surfaces.
Temperatures will climb above freezing after 8 a.m., but additional cold nights this week could extend the threat to crops across the region.
