Naperville, IL – A juvenile from Aurora faces serious charges after being found with a semiautomatic weapon in Naperville.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres reported that a 15-year-old male was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Misdemeanor Possession of Ammunition without a FOID Card. The arrest occurred during an early morning traffic stop on May 5, where the youth allegedly possessed a loaded 9 mm handgun.
According to the Naperville Police Department, the incident unfolded when a police officer stopped a car for improper lane usage and noticed suspicious behavior from the driver, later identified as the juvenile. The subsequent search revealed the firearm hidden in the vehicle, reportedly taken without permission from his mother’s residence.
Following his detention hearing, Judge Chantelle Porter decided the juvenile would be placed on home detention, under his mother’s supervision, pending further court proceedings scheduled for June 14.
State’s Attorney Berlin expressed concern over the incident, highlighting the gravity of a minor engaging in such actions. Chief Arres praised the timely intervention of the police, which possibly averted further unlawful activities. The public is reminded that these charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
