KANKAKEE – Residents who regularly travel on I-57, be prepared for some significant changes coming our way.

Starting this Friday, Oct. 13, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is embarking on a $23.5 million bridge replacement project over Grinnell Road and the Norfolk Southern Railroad, just a short drive north from the Illinois 17 interchange.

For those of us using Grinnell Road between Stanford Drive and Eastgate Industrial Parkway, plan for a closure. On I-57, all traffic will be redirected onto the new northbound bridges, with one lane dedicated to southbound traffic and two for those heading north.

This project, part of the larger Rebuild Illinois capital initiative, aims to be finished by the close of 2024. Fellow Kankakee County travelers, it’s a good time to consider alternate routes and always stay extra cautious in these construction zones.

Stay in the loop on this and other local transport updates by following @IDOTDistrict3 on Twitter or visiting IDOT’s traveler map at www.GettingAroundIllinois.com.
