Naperville, IL – An observant Naperville grocery clerk has been commended for preventing an elaborate $10,000 Bitcoin scam.
According to the Naperville Police Department, the clerk’s recent training with crime prevention specialists proved crucial when he noticed an elderly woman being directed to a Bitcoin ATM while on the phone. Sensing foul play, the clerk intervened, cautioning the woman about the rarity of legitimate businesses requiring Bitcoin payments and disrupting the scammer’s ploy. His actions prompted the scammer to hurriedly end the call, and the concerned clerk managed to take down the woman’s vehicle information and notify the authorities.
The police quickly reached out to the resident at her home, unveiling that she had been lured into the scam through an email promising an antivirus software refund. The scammer had deceitfully convinced her of an over-refunded amount that she needed to return via Bitcoin. Thanks to the clerk’s intervention and the swift response by the Naperville Police, the resident was spared a significant financial loss.
