NEW LENOX, IL – Silver Cross Hospital Monday announced the sudden passing of its President and CEO, Ruth Colby, after complications from a surgical procedure in a Chicago medical facility.

Under Colby’s unparalleled six-year leadership, Silver Cross emerged as a national emblem of healthcare excellence, boasting accolades such as 11-time 100 Top Hospitals rankings, a 5-Star Rating by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and 17 consecutive ‘A’ Safety Ratings from the Leapfrog Group.

Jean Kenol, Chairman of the Silver Cross Board of Directors, remarked, “Ruth’s legacy lies not just in the accolades but in the lives she touched and improved. Her strategic partnerships and innovative programs have cemented Silver Cross’s position on the national healthcare map.”

Colby, who took the CEO reins in 2017, spearheaded a series of groundbreaking initiatives, including the introduction of Will County’s singular Level 3 NICU, a state-renowned open-heart surgery program, and partnerships with leading Chicago health institutions.

Beyond her professional prowess, Colby was an active community member, lending her expertise to numerous boards and championing community health endeavors. In her honor, Michael Mutterer, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer, has been appointed as Interim President & CEO.
