Kankakee County, IL – Two people were killed in a single-car crash on County Line Road in far northern Kankakee County Monday morning.
According to Will County Sheriff’s Police, the incident occurred just before 6 a.m. The westbound car, from out of state, crossed into the eastbound lanes, hit a ditch, flipped onto its side, and finally landed in the South Branch of Rock Creek. Fire personnel from Manteno and Peotone were called to the scene to extricate the victims.
The 60-year-old driver reportedly fell asleep before the crash, causing the vehicle to veer off course. The front seat passenger died at the scene due to the severity of the impact. The rear seat passenger, initially rescued and transported to a nearby hospital, later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. The identities of the victims have not been released.
According to authorities, the vehicle’s extensive damage complicated rescue efforts. The investigation into the crash is ongoing as officials seek to determine all contributing factors. This tragic incident highlights the dangers of drowsy driving, urging motorists to remain vigilant and rested to prevent similar accidents in the future.
