BRAIDWOOD, IL – A severe crash occurred on Interstate 55 near mile marker 232 late on New Year’s Day.
According to authorities the collision was a result of a vehicle being struck by a red minivan, which then fled the scene. The Illinois State Police are now conducting a search for the hit-and-run driver, with the minivan expected to have notable front-end damage. The crash shut down the north bound lanes for a time and led to one victim suffering a leg amputation. Tragically, two others are in critical condition.
Helicopters were unable to assist due to adverse flying conditions. The northbound lanes of I-55 were closed for investigation and emergency response.
