Winnebago, IL – Residents of Winnebago are being warned of a new scam involving callers impersonating police officers to solicit money over the phone.

Authorities have confirmed that these fraudulent calls claim there are outstanding legal matters or warrants for the recipients’ arrest. The Village of Winnebago Police Department has clarified that they do not make such calls and will never request payments via phone, particularly not through gift or prepaid cards. The technology used by scammers can manipulate caller ID systems to appear legitimate.

Community members are advised to disconnect suspicious calls immediately and verify by contacting the Village’s main line directly at 815-335-2020, especially after hours, to ensure connection with official on-duty personnel.
