$130 Million in PPP funding approved for businesses in Kankakee County

Kankakee County was one of the many communities with businesses that began applying for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) in early April.  Since that time, over 150 businesses in Kankakee County have been approved for funding.

A database of the loans was published by the Small Business Administration (SBA) on July 6th.  The data includes all   Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans worth $150,000 or more.  Over 4.8 million loans were given of the $521 billion dollars by the program.  For loans worth less than $150,000, the SBA anonymized the data by state.

“SBA is maintaining a balance between providing transparency to American taxpayers and protecting small businesses’ confidential business information, such as payroll, and personally identifiable information. The public PPP data includes only active loans.” The SBA said in a statement released with the data earlier this month.

As of Tuesday, over $120 billion dollars left in federal funding available, now extended through August 8th. Individual funding received published by the SBA ranged from $150,000 to over $5 million dollars for companies locally.

The PPP has been criticized by some as a program sold to Americans to save small business workers and instead, becoming grants to big businesses due to fulfilling basic requirements. Requirements for employers to be exempt from paying back loans include paying their employees, paying their rent, and paying basic utilities with the funding.

In Kankakee, the average business receiving a loan had 43 employees.  Businesses receiving loans had as few as six employees and as many as over four-hundred.  In total, 155 businesses received funding made publically available which businesses claim directly affected 6,761 employees.  Businesses eligible to receive loans were offered upwards of $131 million in the Kankakee County area.

According to the data released by the SBA earlier this month, PPP dollars bled into every aspect of community operations in Kankakee County, ranging from religious organizations and car dealerships to media and manufacturing operations.

Most of the organizations approved are recognizable by most from the area.

At Bishop McNamara, the organization collectively was approved for two loans stretched out between the Catholic and High School.  The loans ranged from $350,000 to $1M each a piece.  The Bishop McNamara organization as a whole collectively reported 128 employees between the two schools.

Two churches locally were approved for taxpayer dollars in Kankakee County, including Gatheringpoint Church of the Nazarene in Bourbonnais and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Kankakee.  Each approved for an amount ranging from $150,000 to $350,000.

Car dealerships and auto-related services in Kankakee County were approved for upwards of $11.1 million in funding through the PPP. Media companies covering Kankakee County received somewhere between $850,000 and $2.35M collectively through the program.

Essential businesses still operating during the COVID-19 pandemic were also eligible for funding under the PPP program.  Other notable organizations receiving approval through the PPP funding program included Urban Farmer, KC-CASA, Manteno Sportsman’s Club, Monical Pizza Corporation.
