Fayetteville, AK – Drivers and residents along the Arkansas–Oklahoma border should prepare for a dangerous line of severe thunderstorms tonight that could unleash destructive wind gusts topping 80 mph across parts of northwest Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma.
According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, a significant storm line will push east through eastern Oklahoma during the evening before reaching northwest Arkansas overnight. The system carries the potential for widespread damaging straight-line winds, embedded tornadoes and pockets of large hail as it crosses the region.
Cities most at risk include Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers and Bentonville in northwest Arkansas, along with Fort Smith near the Oklahoma border. Storms moving out of eastern Oklahoma could rapidly intensify as they approach the Interstate 49 corridor and the Arkansas River Valley. Travel along Interstate 40 near Fort Smith and Interstate 49 through Fayetteville may become hazardous if intense wind gusts develop.
The biggest concern is powerful wind capable of snapping tree limbs, damaging roofs and causing scattered power outages. Residents should secure outdoor furniture, trash cans and other loose items before the storms arrive. Emergency officials also recommend enabling weather alerts overnight in case warnings are issued while people are sleeping.
The strongest storms are expected during the late evening and overnight hours before gradually weakening as the system moves farther east by early Wednesday. Additional watches or warnings could still be issued if the storm line strengthens.
