Auburn, Indiana – A two-vehicle crash in DeKalb County led to an OWI arrest and firearm charges Thursday evening.
According to the Indiana State Police Fort Wayne Post, a trooper responded shortly before 7:30 p.m. April 16 to a crash at the intersection of County Road 40 and County Road 39. Investigators determined a gray Ford Bronco had stopped at a stop sign when it was struck from behind by a brown 2019 GMC Acadia.
Police said the Bronco was driven by Megan Freudenberger, 47, of Auburn. The GMC Acadia was driven by a man identified as Brummett, also of Auburn.
Both drivers reported minor injuries. Freudenberger was evaluated at the scene but declined transport, while Brummett was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for further evaluation.
During the investigation, troopers suspected Brummett was allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Authorities reported finding alcohol containers and a handgun inside the vehicle he had been driving.
After being released from the hospital, Brummett was taken into custody and arrested on multiple charges, including possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, altered gun identification, unlawful carrying of a handgun with a prior conviction, possession of marijuana, and operating while intoxicated in a manner that endangers a person.
Indiana State Police were assisted at the scene by the Butler Police Department, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, and local fire and towing services.
The incident briefly affected traffic in the area as crews worked to clear the vehicles.
Crashes like this can impact evening commutes for students and workers traveling rural county roads.
